The Project manager‘s  main responsibilities fall under 7 categories: project planning, cost management, time management, quality management, contract administration, safety management and construction management professional practice.

The Great Pyramids, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and the ancient  cathedrals of Europe did not rise up haphazardly. From start to finish, precise coordination was required to complete these massive projects that often stretched across decades and generations.

The management of construction projects requires knowledge of modern management as well as an understanding of the design and construction process. Construction projects have a specific set of objectives and constraints such as a required time frame for completion.

Construction managers plan and coordinate construction projects. They may have job titles such as Construction superintendent, project engineer, project manager, or Manager(Projects). Construction managers may plan and direct a whole project or just a part of a project. The term Construction manager describes salaried or self-employed managers who oversee construction supervisors and workers.

Construction project managers are often those who worked in the construction industry from the beginning of their Career.  However, more and more, Project Managers hold a college degree in the profession and must achieve any number of certifications to practice their profession. Construction managers often work with engineers, architects, and others who are involved in the construction process. Without architects there would be no construction and architectural project managers hold many of the same certifications and possess the same skills as their construction counterparts.

Large construction projects, such as an Airport  are too complicated for one person to manage. These projects are divided into many segments: Site preparation, including land clearing and earth moving, landscaping and road construction, building construction, including excavation and laying of foundations, as well as erection of structural framework, floors, walls, and roofs, and building systems, including fire-protection, electrical, plumbing, air-conditioning, and heating.

PMI-certified Construction project managers are gaining acceptance among government entities and organizations.  Certified PMs are much sought after in the Middle East and China, where construction opportunities abound.
